Tejocote (Mexican Hawthorne)

The tejocote is a small, round fruit native to Mexico, also known as cajanate or Mexican hawthorn . Its flavor is sour with a hint of sweetness and it is commonly used in traditional Mexican cuisine, especially in drinks such as ponche (a hot fruit drink typically consumed at Christmas) and in the preparation of jams or sweets. The tejocote has a firm texture, yellow-orange color, and a small stone inside.
